Some time we need to grab posts,topics from the board and show them on our home/index page or anywhere on our site. To make the things much easier, SMF provides all this in one script where we call a function with arguments and dress it up according to our needs. File is SSI.php and can be found in the root folder of the forum. You can also add extra parameters/piece of code to your SSI.php. After having factory repos for KDE4.6, now we have stable repos for KDE4.6, so we can stay with the stable packages. The process of installing or upgrading is very simple, if you are using factory repos(disable/delete it), switching to stable is also easy. Nothing going to be lost in the process. It will just download and install the packages while changing to stable repos.

Enable mod_rewrite on openSUSE 11.3 [Linux]

Last night i installed vanilla forum the latest version(2.0.16), but before that i got into trouble like ‘cannot install vanilla forum because the database host provided is wrong’ some thing like that type of error. Which was basically by .htaccess file. I finally installed it but after some time figuring out the mod_rewrite ghost. Actually it’s quite easy to enable it, there was one thing missing, which took some of my time to figure it out. Lets start how to enable the ghost.

Backup and Restore MySQL database in Linux via terminal

Personally i think, that Linux terminal is the strongest application/tool whatever you name it. Yesterday i was restoring a MySQL database size of 5MB via MySQL Administrator application, and it crashed several times. Actually i use it because the easy way to have GUI with few clicks, but that doesn’t mean i never used terminal for such things. But this crashing made me think of this powerful tool to use and use it forever..

KDE 4.4.5 in openSUSE 11.3

openSUSE 11.3 by default have KDE4.4.4 desktop for KDE. As we know, KDE4.4.5 is released and even KDE4.5 rc2 also has been released some time ago. KDE4.4.5 is very stable and many bugs have been fixed since KDE4.4.4. For this upgrading process we will use factory repos for 11.3, which currently have KDE4.4.5, and later KDE4.5 will be pushed to it(i guess).

A while ago, maybe can say for 30 minutes i play with RC1 and it’s not bad at all, improved a lot over beta2. But there are still some minor issues and bugs which i hope will be resolved before final release in August. Bugs like crash of Dolphin, network selection names missing when right click on network icon in system tray, missing information in notifications and jobs in system tray etc etc.. Filed some bug reports in this short time through bug tracker in the opened apps.

Install urdu fonts in Linux (Ubuntu & openSUSE)

Ok, this was not that easy stuff if you don’t know how to do it and where to find it. I mean 1st fonts, then installation or copying to the right directory. Websites like bbcurdu.com and urdupoint.com are common Urdu news sites which i am sure most of the Urdu reading people will read for the latest news and articles. These two websites use different fonts for rendering for browsers like Firefox and Chrome. I am not using any Urdu keyboard here and not using translation for the whole system, its just how to read Urdu websites in Linux, so please this tutorial is just for installing fonts system wide for browsers in Linux not a language pack etc. I will focus on two distros at the moment, Ubuntu and openSUSE. Ubuntu 9.04 and openSUSE 11.2(KDE4.4.3) will be used for the installation with Firefox 3.6.3, Firefox 3.0.19, Chrome 6.0.400.0.
